General incorporated association in Japan · Established 2025

Building a research field for the systematic design of learning songs.

The International Association for Scientific Song Design and Language Learning (SSDLL) supports research, scholarly publication, international collaboration, and field building in Scientific Song Design and related language-learning research.

About SSDLL

An academic association for a developing interdisciplinary research area.

The International Association for Scientific Song Design and Language Learning (SSDLL) advances research into how songs can be designed, sequenced, documented, and evaluated to support language learning.

Its interdisciplinary scope spans language education, learning sciences, music, educational technology, and AI-assisted design, with evidence, transparency, and learner outcomes at the centre of the research programme.

Research programme

Four connected areas of field development.

SSDLL examines learning songs as researchable educational designs—individually, across song sequences, and in relation to measurable learning outcomes.

01

Scientific Song Design

Conceptual foundations for the systematic design, documentation, and evaluation of songs intended to support language learning.

02

Song Sequence Architecture

Study of how learning songs relate over time through recurrence, variation, contrast, cueing, and planned withholding.

03

Language Learning

Song-based approaches to vocabulary acquisition and retention across languages, learner groups, and educational contexts.

04

Evidence & Evaluation

Methods for measuring learning outcomes, reporting designs transparently, and critically examining effectiveness claims.

Association journal

JSSDLL

Journal of Scientific Song Design and Language Learning

JSSDLL is the association journal of SSDLL. It covers Scientific Song Design, language learning, research methods, evidence and evaluation, and practice-related scholarship.
